pedal poll 2022

Red Deer taking part in national bicycle count

May 27, 2022 | 12:55 PM

Red Deer is once again taking part in this year’s national bicycle count.

Pedal Poll 2022 runs this year from June 7-12.

Pedal Poll/Sondo Vélo provides the opportunity to identify who is cycling and where, in order to work toward inclusion, and to address climate change.

Bill Franz, with the Red Deer Association for Bicycle Commuting (RDABC) says Vélo Canada Bikes, the advocacy organization behind Pedal Poll, has successfully lobbied for a National Active Transportation Strategy and funding.

“Last year’s inaugural Pedal Poll saw Red Deer as one of 14 focus communities across Canada and the only one in Alberta. This year, there are 30 across Canada,” he shares.

“Red Deer’s count locations are picked in conjunction with City’s Engineering and Parks department, with the data gathered being useful for planning.

Last year’s results for “Who is cycling in Red Deer?” counted 1,090 cyclists, 61 per cent of whom were male.

Volunteers for the event will use CounterPoint, an app designed to help understand how people move. To learn more about the count or to volunteer, visit velocanadabikes.org.
