Premier Kenney meets with western premiers

May 26, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Premier Jason Kenney will represent Alberta’s interests at a meeting with New West Partnership premiers and at the Western Premiers’ Conference in Regina, SK, this week.

The back-to-back sessions on May 26 and 27 are the first in-person meetings to be held since the start of the pandemic, say government officials.

Agenda items for the New West Partnership premiers’ meeting include labour mobility, supply chain and energy security.

Western premiers will discuss a range of topics including supporting growth, social and economic recovery, energy security and sustainable development, labour mobility, immigration, health care and the state of the federation.

The New West Partnership Trade Agreement involves the governments of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Officials say it creates a single economic region to further opportunities and cooperation on trade, investment and labour mobility matters in an effort to eliminate barriers, enhance competitiveness and increase opportunities both nationally and internationally.

The Western Premiers’ Conference comprises provincial and territorial premiers from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Saskatchewan and Yukon. Officials say it enables premiers to work collaboratively, form closer ties, foster constructive relationships among governments and show leadership on important issues that matter to western Canadians.
