Rebels selections underway in 2022 WHL Prospects Draft

The Red Deer Rebels selected 10 players at the 2022 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft on Thursday.

The group includes five forwards, three defenceman and two goaltenders.

Four central Alberta players were also drafted on Thursday, including goaltender Corbin Sanderman from Three Hills. A member of the Airdrie Xtreme U15 AAA this past season, Sanderman was selected by the Everett Silvertips in the fourth round 86th overall.

Elsewhere, left winger Dylan Ruff of Sylvan Lake was selected in the seventh round, 143rd overall by the Victoria Royals. Ruff played with the Rink Hockey Academy U16 prep team in Kelowna, B.C. this past season.

Red Deer’s Jaxen Smyth was selected in the eighth round, 169th overall by the Kelowna Rockets. The left winger played this past season with the U15 AAA Red Deer Rebels.

Meantime, Kyler Beechinor of Bentley, AB, was selected in the ninth round, 196th overall by the Kelowna Rockets. The left defenceman also played with the U15 AAA Red Deer Rebels this past season.

Players eligible for the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft were 2007-born players who reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
