Red Deer MAG receives prestigious exhibition award
The Costume Society of America has announced the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery as recipient of the 2022 CSA Richard Martin Exhibition Award/Small Museums for their exhibition titled Powwow! Ohcîwin the Origins.
Officials note guest curators and creators Patrick and Marrisa (Moccasin) Mitsuing, gathered stories, worked with Knowledge Keepers across North America, and carefully coordinated the making of the Regalia for this exhibition.
Ultimately seven powwow dance styles were created, represented by seven full Regalia ensembles made by Indigenous Artists from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia, Montana, and Arizona. The culmination of these conversations and relationships was presented at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery from September 19, 2020 through February 21, 2021 with the aim of showing what powwow is, where it came from, and how community members can participate in this living tradition.
In the context of a post-Truth and Reconciliation Commission Canada and a province where powwow was once outlawed, officials say this exhibition aimed to engage with Knowledge Keepers and Indigenous artisans to create the Regalia, display it in a respectful, engaging way, and teach the public about the practice and history of powwow.
