Redevelopment of Ponoka’s 51 Avenue to begin mid-May

May 5, 2022 | 4:17 PM

Work is set to begin on the redevelopment of Ponoka’s 51 Avenue.

Weather-permitting, it will start mid-May.

The improvements planned for 51 Avenue (between 50 Street and 51 Street) will replace aging infrastructure that has reached the end of its life cycle. The project will include:

– Excavation and replacement of underground water, sanitary sewer and storm water infrastructure; – Reconstruction of the 51 Avenue roadway followed by asphalt paving and line marking;
– Concrete sidewalk replacement and upgrades;
– Landscaping including new shrubs and trees;
– Redevelopment and design improvements to the municipal parking lot on the south side of 51 Avenue; and
– Lighting upgrades

“The redevelopment of 51 Avenue is a priority project that will improve the quality of life for the whole community for many years to come, as it will result in important physical improvements that will help revitalize the downtown. Those improvements include helping to prevent future water main breaks and sanitary sewage issues for businesses along that street,” said Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson.

“The project is a critical capital project to promote economic development in our community and to attract new businesses, shoppers and tourism to Ponoka.”

During construction, parking will be unavailable on 51 Avenue. Public parking will be available in the municipal parking lot on the south side of 51 Avenue with access from the alley.

Pedestrian access will also be disrupted; during construction, access to store front entrances will be temporarily cut off, however alternate access options to these businesses will be facilitated at that time, allowing for continued customer access to 51 Avenue businesses throughout the construction period.

The project costs $3.67 million, and will be funded by Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) grant dollars ($1.58 million), the federal Gas Tax Grant ($200,000), the municipality ($190,000), and debenture/loan ($1.7 million).

Construction is expected to be complete by end of 2022.
