UPDATE – May 6, 10 a.m.

A large fire destroyed a business east of Lacombe Thursday night.

Dennis Cole, fire chief with Lacombe Fire Department, says crews were dispatched just before 3:30 to The Complete K9, which is located on Highway 12, about 10 km east of the city.

Around 20 employees and a handful of animals on-site at the time all got out safely, Cole says.

“When we first arrived, there was pretty significant fire coming out of the back, and off to the side of the building,” says Cole. “By the time it was all said and done, the building was entirely lost.”

Cole estimates the building to have been about 13,000 square feet, with losses in the millions once taking into account product that was on-site.

Cole says the cause is unknown but it’s believed the fire began in the back of the building. The investigation remains ongoing.

Clive Fire Department and Blackfalds Fire Department also responded, with a total of three engines and three water tenders on scene to help. Crews had the fire knocked down after about three hours, but remained for several more into the night to ensure hotspots were put out.
