The Red Deer Rebels were able to capitalize on a couple of power play opportunities while en-route to a 3-1 win over the Wheat Kings at Westoba Place in Brandon Tuesday night.

Red Deer’s victory puts them up 2-1 in the best of seven first round WHL playoff series.

The first period saw Brandon light the lamp first when Logen Hammett scored on Rebels goaltender Chase Coward at 16:01 to put the Wheat Kings up 1-0. Hammett’s first goal of the playoffs was assisted by Jake Chiasson and Riley Ginnell.

After 20 minutes of play, Brandon outshot the Rebels 9-7 and had a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, the Rebels began their comeback when Brandon’s Ridly Greig was sent to the box for tripping. Liam Keeler capitalized on the power play opportunity at 18:43, scoring his first goal of the playoffs on Brandon netminder Ethan Kruger. Assists came from the power pair of Ben King and Arshdeep Bains, making the score 1-1.

This period, however, it was the Rebels that outshot the Wheat Kings 9-8, for a two-period total of 17-16 in favour of Brandon.

In the third period, the Rebels made sure they would not be losing two games in a row.

A power play opportunity arose for the team when Brandon’s Ridly Greig was called for interference on Rebels goaltender Chase Coward. Red Deer’s Arshdeep Bains seized the opportunity, scoring at 6:35 for his second goal of the playoffs. Jace Weir and Kalan Lind assisted on the play which eventually turned out to be the game winner and put the Rebels up 2-1.

Then at 15:26, the Rebels’ Ben King solidified the win with the help of Arshdeep Bains and Jace Weir, scoring his first of the playoffs and giving Red Deer a 3-1 lead.

Although the Wheat Kings pulled goalie Ethan Kruger out of the net at 17:32, it was to no avail. He was put back on the ice at 19:13, without any goals for Brandon.

Both teams had equal shots on goal for the third period, 16-16, with the Wheat Kings barely outshooting the Rebels overall, 33-32.

On power play, the Rebels went 2/7 while the Wheat Kings went 0/6 with the man advantage.

All three stars of the game, however, went to the Red Deer Rebels. Ben King received the third star for his one goal and one assist on the night, while goaltender Chase Coward was awarded the second star for saving 32 of 33 shots. The first star went to Arshdeep Bains, contributing on all three Rebels goals, with one goal and two assists on the evening.
