A community celebration is taking place May 7 to mark the completion of phase one of expansion at MEGlobal Athletic Park in Lacombe.

Phase one included doubling the size of the field house with more washrooms, change rooms, storage, meeting rooms, an elevator, and fully accessible viewing tower with media and coaches space, as well as timing facilities for the running track.

It was made possible with a contribution of $2 million from MEGlobal Canada.

“On behalf of the Lacombe Athletic Park Association (LAPA), we are pleased to announce the completion of Phase 1 of our expansion plans,” said LAPA president Jay Adamson. “We feel we will (now) be able to bring in larger, more diverse sporting events to Lacombe and area. We are so fortunate to have great community partners in the City of Lacombe, Lacombe County and Wolf Creek Public Schools who are in full support of the expansion phases.

Adamson adds that citizens of Lacombe, the County and Wolf Creek students will reap the benefits of the expanded park for many years to come.

It’s also been announced that MEGlobal will retain naming rights until 2040.

MEGlobal Vice President of Manufacturing, Rocco Schurink, says, “We are so proud to be part of a project that will bring new opportunities to the community while enhancing the experience for players and fans alike. It’s an honour to put our name on this facility.”

Phase two of expansion will be the running track and field infrastructure.

Members of the public are invited to the grand opening on May 7, which will include a ribbon-cutting, tours of the facility and the Central Alberta Buccaneers taking on the Airdrie Irish.

Tickets are $10/person and 12 & under are free. MEGlobal will be giving away towels to the first 500 people through the gate. Tours start at 12:30 and speeches are at 1.

The Bucs game is part of the team’s 2022 spring camp and kicks off at 2 p.m.
