Sentencing is scheduled next month for a man charged in an axe wielding vandalism spree in Ponoka nearly four years ago.

Joseph Soosay, 22, is scheduled for sentencing in Wetaskiwin Court of Queen’s Bench on May 18, 2022.

He faces 13 counts, including disguise with intent, two counts of arson damage to property, five counts of mischief damage to property, three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, theft under $5000, and breach of conditions.

Mounties say several windows were smashed with an axe and a shed set on fire during a two-hour period in downtown Ponoka on Aug. 13 and 14, 2018.

RCMP responded at about 11:10 p.m. on Aug. 13 to a number of calls reporting a male with an axe in the area of 58 Street and 53 Avenue. It was reported he was allegedly trying to break into houses, smashing windows in vehicles, and set a shed and fence on fire which both burnt to the ground.

Officers located and arrested a male without incident. Upon arrest the male was found in possession of two axes, one handsaw, and miscellaneous stolen items.

No one was injured during the incidents.
