100 Men Red Deer encourages you to “Be a man who gives a damn!”

The 100 Men Red Deer fundraising club is calling on the public to “Be a Man who gives a damn”.

The club has released its new schedule for the year with their next meeting on June 6 at The Hideout Restaurant at 7 p.m.

Club members get together four times a year to fundraise for a local central Alberta charity. Before the event, members nominate charities and four are randomly chosen to give a presentation of their organization at the event. Through a vote, a charity is then chosen to receive the funds which are a minimum of $100 by each member. The donations are given directly to the charity that same night.

“This design of 100 Men meetings just fit perfectly for somebody like me who is busy with work and family life but I still want to make sure I give back to the local community while meeting other like-minded people that want to support,” said Konstantin Neykurs, President of 100 Men Red Deer.

Becoming co-president in 2018 and president in 2020, Neykurs says the club is a great place to get together for a relaxing evening, bringing friends and spouses, all while doing a good deed.

“The feel of it is literally a bunch of guys who got together to have a pint of beer to do something good for the community; that’s the ambiance,” he said.

But don’t be fooled by the name: gender is not a criterion for joining this club. While the name is part of an international movement of 100 Men Who Care and 100 Women Who Care, Neykurs says Red Deer’s club is open to men and women.

The goal of the club since 2020, Neykurs says, is to have at least 100 consistent members who attend each meeting to donate. Since establishing in Red Deer in 2015, roughly 270 members have signed up over the years. However, Neykurs says around 50 members attend the meetings, with 35 being regulars and 15 infrequent members.

With 100 active and dedicated members, he says the club could have a large “collective impact”.

The club’s last meeting took place on Sept. 27, 2021 and raised $3,550 for the Red Deer & District Community Foundation.

“Our strength is in numbers. $100 on its own doesn’t go far these days but $100 multiplied by 50, 60 or 100 makes a huge impact on our local deserving causes,” the club said in a release.

The most important part of the club, for Neykurs, is the need to help each other.

“Every member of the community needs to give back and it doesn’t matter if you can give back a little or a lot, depending on your situation. There are various ways of giving back with your time, with funds, or with gifts,” he said.

And if the club is not what you’re looking for, Neykurs hopes to inspire others nonetheless to find their own way to help out.

“I definitely encourage everyone who reads this article to find their way of giving back because nothing feels better than giving and supporting your own community,” he said.

The other two meetings this year will be held on Sept. 12 and Dec. 5.

Membership is free and door prizes can be won at the events. Sponsors cover the first drink of the evening.

Neykurs is also looking for businesses who would like to promote the club by putting up posters in their storefronts.
