A trial has been set for a west central Alberta man accused of threats with a weapon earlier this year.

Michael Mackinaw, 38, of the O’Chiese First Nation, is scheduled for trial in Rocky Mountain House provincial court on Nov. 22, 2022.

He’s charged with assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property over $5000, and two counts of fail to comply with a release order.

On Feb. 8, 2022, RCMP investigated an incident where the accused was alleged to have been driving a vehicle on the O’Chiese First Nation, where he and the passenger had a verbal altercation. The suspect was accused of threatening the passenger with a weapon. The passenger, meanwhile, who was also the owner of the vehicle, was able to exit the vehicle uninjured, said RCMP.

Mackinaw has also been charged in relation to a separate investigation.

On Feb.9, 2022, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Rocky Mountain House RCMP responded to 911 call of a report of a male on the Sunchild Road who had been stabbed.

Upon arrival, RCMP located a male who was suffering from what appeared to be serious injuries. The male was transported to hospital by STARS air ambulance.

Mounties say the investigation indicates the victim and the suspect who had been travelling in the same vehicle, exited the vehicle when it pulled off of the highway. An interaction occurred where the victim received serious injuries from what is believed to be an edged weapon.

As a result of the investigation, charges of aggravated assault and two counts of fail to comply with a release order have been laid against Mackinaw.

Those matters return to court in Rocky Mountain House April 27, 2022.
