Apr 13, 2022 | 11:56 PM

The Red Deer Rebels did not take Wednesday night’s game for granted as they triumphed over the Calgary Hitmen in an 8-3 win at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Marking their sixth straight win against the Hitmen since October 2021, leading WHL players Ben King and Arshdeep Bains once again earned two of Wednesday night’s stars with their stellar performances.

The first period was a good start for the Rebels, with Ben King scoring his 51st goal of the season on goaltender Brayden Peters just before the seventh minute mark. Assisted by dynamic duo partner Arshdeep Bains and Liam Keeler, the team was now on the scoreboard 1-0.

Shortly after, it was Red Deer’s Arshdeep Bains that scored the goal at 10:09. It was his 41st goal of the season, with Liam Keeler once again making the assist, along with Christoffer Sedoff.

It was 2-0 for the Rebels after 20 minutes, with Red Deer outshooting Calgary 14-8.

The second period was nothing short of action packed. Within the first two minutes, the Rebels’ Jace Weir scored his fifth goal of the WHL season. Assisted by Jayden Grubbe, Red Deer’s lead increased to 3-0.

But the Hitmen had enough jabs, with Zac Funk scoring his 21st of the season on Rebels netminder Chase Coward at 5:58. Assisted by Trey Patterson and Cael Zimmerman, the home team was now behind 3-1.

Then just 18 seconds later, Red Deer’s Dallon Melin scored his 10th goal this season at 6:16. Josh Medernach earned his first assist for the team, bringing the Rebels lead to 4-1. It would later prove to be the game winning goal.

However, Zac Funk scored again for Calgary at 7:34, his second of the game and 22nd of the season, with assists coming from Cael Zimmerman and Blake Allan, cutting the Rebels lead to 4-2.

The period ended with Red Deer in a two goal lead but Calgary outshooting the Rebels 14-10 for a two period total of 24-22 in favour of the Rebels.

The Rebels then began to pull away in the third period when Calgary’s Oliver Tulk was called for high sticking at the 1:56 mark, giving Red Deer a power play which they managed to capitalize on. Ben King scored his 52nd goal of the season just seven seconds later, assisted by Christoffer Sedoff and Arshdeep Bains, making the score 5-2 Rebels.

Following King’s lead, the Rebels’ Dallon Melin also scored his second goal of the evening and 11th of the season at 7:30. Matteo Fabrizi and Jhett Larson claimed the assists and made the score 6-2 Red Deer.

At this point, the Hitmen made a goalie change, pulling Brayden Peters out and putting Ethan Buenaventura in.

With the switch perhaps providing a flash of encouragement for the Hitmen, Calgary’s Blake Stevenson managed a goal at 12:08, with an assist from Sean Tschigerl. It was Stevenson’s 25th goal of the season and cut the Rebels lead in half to 6-3.

The hype was short lived though when Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz scored his 14th goal of the season at 14:02, with Ollie Josephson and Hunter Mayo getting the assists to make it 7-3 Rebels.

Less than four minutes later, Arshdeep Bains scored one last goal for the Rebels at 17:51. His 42nd of the WHL season was assisted by Jace Weir, for a final score of 8-3.

The Rebels outshot the Hitmen 13-8 in the third period and 37-30 overall.

Red Deer also went 1/2 on power play while Calgary went 0/3 with the man advantage.

The third star of the game went to the Rebels’ Ben King for his two goals on the night, while the second star went to Calgary’s Zac Funk who also scored twice. The first star went to Red Deer’s Arshdeep Bains for his two goals and two assists on the evening.

The win improves the Rebels’ record at 45-18-2-2 with 94 points and third place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference, while the loss for Calgary places them with a record of 25-34-6-2 with 58 points and ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Rebels will play their final regular season game on Saturday, April 16 against the Edmonton Oil Kings before hitting the playoffs. Puck-drop is 7 p.m. at the Peavey Mart Centrium with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND radio.
