Apr 8, 2022 | 11:18 PM

Make that five wins-in-a row for the Red Deer Rebels after a 5-4 overtime victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Peavey Mart Centrium Friday evening.

It’s also the second game-in-a-row that Red Deer has come from behind to win in overtime after defeating Edmonton in the same fashion to start the week on Sunday.

Scoring began in the first period when Red Deer’s Talon Brigley beat Hurricanes netminder Jared Picklyk for his eighth goal of the season, unassisted at 6:42 to put the home team up 1-0.

The Rebels would then go up 2-0 when Kalan Lind picked up a power play goal at 17:41 for his 20th of the season, assisted by Christoffer Sedoff and Ben King. The goal followed a roughing penalty to the Cane’s Kade Nolan.

Red Deer led 2-0 after 20 minutes and outshot Lethbridge 16-8 in the opening period.

The second period would see the Hurricanes get on the board though, when Yegor Klavdiev beat Rebels netminder Chase Coward at the 3:50 mark for his 19th goal of the season. Assists came from Alex Thacker and Justin Hall to make it 2-1 Red Deer.

Logan Wormald then tied it up for Lethbridge when he found the back of the net at 10:29 to make it 2-2. It was Wormald’s 13th goal of the season and assisted by Jett Jones and Tyson Laventure.

The visitors then pulled ahead with their third unanswered goal of the period when Noah Chadwick scored at 17:20 to make it 3-2. The goal was Chadwick’s second of the season and assisted by Corson Hopwo and Joe Arntsen.

After two periods, it was Lethbridge who led 3-2, with the Hurricanes outshooting Red Deer 17-8 in the second period for a two-period total of 25-24 in favour of Lethbridge.

Red Deer didn’t wait long to respond, however, when Jayden Grubbe scored his 14th goal of the season just 40 seconds into the third period to tie it up at 3-3. Jace Isley and Jace Weir assisted on the play.

Lethbridge would reclaim the lead though when Red Deer’s Hunter Mayo was called for charging at 6:39. The Hurricanes Logan Wormald capitalized with just six seconds left in the power play to make it 4-3. It was Wormald’s second goal of the game and 14th of the season, assisted by Joe Arntsen.

The Rebels Christoffer Sedoff then evened the score at 12:04 when he netted his seventh of the season, assisted by Liam Keeler and Ben King to make it 4-4.

That’s where the score remained after regulation, sending the game into overtime.

Red Deer outshot Lethbridge 10-8 in the third period for a three-period total of 34-33 in favour of the Rebels.

In extra time, however, it took one shot only for Red Deer to capture the win, when Ben King scored the game winner at 2:56 to make it a 5-4 OT final. It was King’s 49th goal of the season and assisted by Arshdeep Bains. The duo in fact, are number one and two in the WHL for points, with Bains at 102 points and King with 99.

Shots finished 35-33 in favour of Red Deer, with the Rebels going 1/4 on the power play and Lethbridge going 1/2 with the man advantage.

Red Deer’s Christoffer Sedoff was named the game’s third star with one goal and one assist on the evening, while the Hurricanes Logan Wormald earned the game’s second star for his two-goal performance. The Rebels Ben King, however, was named the game’s first star with his two assists and game-winning goal for a three-point night.

The overtime win improves Red Deer’s record to 44-17-2-2 with 92 points and third place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference. The overtime loss for Lethbridge, meanwhile, puts their record at 30-30-4-1 with 65 points and seventh place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.

Red Deer now hits the road to the Alberta capital for another tussle with the Oil Kings on Saturday, April 9. Face-off at Rogers Place is 2:00 p.m. MDT.
