LAST WEEK

The Rebels won both ends of a home-and-home weekend series versus the first-place Edmonton Oil Kings. On Saturday (April 2), Arshdeep Bains scored with less than eight minutes remaining as the Rebels came from behind to defeat the Oil Kings 4-3. Kai Uchacz tied the game 3-3 with a shorthanded goal early in the third period. Jackson van de Leest and Jayden Grubbe also scored for the Rebels while Chase Coward made 32 saves for his 20th win of the season. The announced crowd of 4,552 is the largest at the Peavey Mart Centrium so far this season.

On Sunday (April 3), the Rebels trekked north to Rogers Place in Edmonton. Arshdeep Bains scored with 9.2 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime where Jhett Larson scored on a breakaway to give the Rebels a 5-4 win over the Oil Kings. Bains had three points on the day for a league leading 101 points on the season. The Rebels also got goals from Talon Brigley, Liam Keeler and Ben King (his league leading 48th). Connor Ungar earned the win with 35 saves.

RECORD

The Rebels are 43-17-2-2 this season. They are in second place in the WHL Central Division and third overall in the Eastern Conference. It’s the seventh time in the team’s 30-year history that the Rebels have reached the 40-win mark in a season.

NOTABLES

Ben King is the WHL McSweeny’s Player of the Month for March. King had 23 points in 11 games as the Rebels went 8-2-0-1 in March. King leads the WHL with 48 goals, which includes 22 power play tallies (1st WHL) and 14 game winners (1st WHL).

The Rebels are 7-2-0-1 in their last 10 games and 2-0-0-0 so far in the month of April. The Rebels have earned points in 10-straight home games at the Peavey Mart Centrium (9-0-0-1).

Ben King and Arshdeep Bains remain 1-2 atop the Western Hockey League scoring race. Bains leads all WHL players with 101 points followed by King with 96. The last Rebels player to win the WHL scoring title was Justin Mapletoft in 2000-01.

King is on pace to become the first Rebels player since Kyle Wanvig in 2000-21 to score 50 goals in a season. His 14 game winning tallies leave him just two shy of the WHL single season record of 16 (Brian Propp, Brandon, 1978-79).

Bains, a native of Surrey BC, signed an entry level contract on March 11 with the Vancouver Canucks, the team he grew up cheering for. Bains is currently on an eight -game point streak.
