Care for Newcomers

Central Alberta Refugee Effort re-branding and changing its name after over 40 years

The Central Alberta Refugee Effort has announced a name change. Officials say the organization will now be called Care for Newcomers.

The organization has also changed its branding to show they serve a broader community of newcomers to Canada.

Founded in 1979 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to assist with the settlement of Indochinese refugees fleeing the aftermath of the Vietnam War, the focus of the society in 1980 was to help refugees arriving in central Alberta.

In the last 40 years, officials say the organization has evolved to not only serve refugees, but all newcomers to Canada, and promote a welcoming community for them.

“It is important to those that are moving to our country or fleeing war to feel safe, welcome, and have access to all the support and resources they may need. To be relatable to all newcomers, regardless of how they are arriving, we knew in time, changing our identity was essential,” reads a statement from Care for Newcomers. “At our core, we CARE about those we serve. And so, we have become Care for Newcomers.”

“Starting our 4th decade in the central Alberta community,” the statement continues. “We want to continue to be known as a part of the community that helps to integrate newcomers by providing youth supports, in-school programs, community activities, English learning and classes, employment resources, and so much more.”

The organization’s new website is www.carefornewcomers.ca.
