Calling all Red Deerians to become Green Deerians

Mar 29, 2022 | 2:16 PM

As the snow melts away, grass isn’t the only thing revealed. Trash and litter also become visible. However, each spring, thousands of Red Deerians become Green Deerians and volunteer to pick up litter!

Volunteers are needed now more than ever as we see the monumental increase in litter that can be directly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. The following photos were taken in different parts of Red Deer as I went about doing some errands during the week of March 21, 2022.

Scenes like these are all over our city right now. How many face masks can you spot?

Save the dates for Green Deer events in 2022:

  • March 21–May 31 Spring Cleanup Campaign
  • Thursday, May 5 Mayor and Council Cleanup
  • Saturday, June 4 Red Deer River Cleanup
  • Saturday, September 24 Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

To participate in the Spring Cleanup Campaign, register your litter cleanup by filling out the online registration form between March 21 and May 31 (https://forms.gle/o46uaGKbx6ubNy8K6). Once you’re registered, you can pick up free supplies from the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, Recreation Centre, Collicutt Centre, or G.H. Dawe Community Centre. All registrants are also automatically entered to win prizes donated by Canadian Tire Red Deer South and Save-On-Foods.

The Mayor and Council Cleanup event is scheduled to take place on May 5 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Celebration Plaza. During this event, Mayor Johnston and city councillors will pick up litter in downtown Red Deer to show their support for Green Deer and to encourage citizens to get involved. This event is subject to change due to weather or other concerns.

Volunteers for the river and shoreline cleanups on June 4 and September 24 meet at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre on the given dates to receive their supplies and route. They then proceed to pick up litter along their assigned route. Raffle prizes are awarded to volunteers at the end of each event. Both cleanups are subject to change due to weather or other concerns.
