Rebels buck Broncos to complete six-game regular season sweep

62 games, down, six to go for the Red Deer Rebels who laid the smackdown on the Swift Current Broncos Saturday night at the Centrium.

Coming in, Red Deer was a perfect 5-0-0-0 against the Broncos this season, and with the latest victory, they sweep the season series, outscoring their foe 31-9.

The latest W was pretty much sealed after 20 minutes.

Arshdeep Bains (36th) scored 9:11 in, his league-leading 97th point of the season. Jhett Larson got an assist, as did Ben King for his 95th point of the year. Bains and King came into the came 1 and 2 in league scoring.

Kalan Lind (19th) scored just 24 seconds later, unassisted. Then, at 14:19, Jayden Grubbe (11th) scored to make it 3-0, assists to Blake Gustafson and Jace Isley.

In the second, Gustafson (3rd) potted one himself at the 3:11 mark for a 4-0 lead.

Eric Van Impe (5th) at 3:28, and then Josh Davies (16th) at 10:02, cut the Rebels’ lead in half for Swift Current.

But a three-goal lead was restored at 13:59 as Grubbe (12th) got his second of the night, with Kai Uchacz getting the helper, and it was 5-2 Rebels after 40 minutes.

In the final frame, Red Deer iced it away, Uchacz (12th) also scoring his second of the night. The final score was 6-2 Red Deer.

Both teams finished 0/2 on the PP, with Red Deer outshooting Swift Current 38-23.

Jayden Grubbe was named first star, while Kai Uchacz earned second star honours, and Kalan Lind rounded them out as third star.

Chase Coward (19-9-0-2), who is from Swift Current, made 21 stops on 23 shots faced in the victory.

The Rebels are now 41-17-2-2 (84 points) on the season, good for third in the Eastern Conference behind Edmonton (95) and Winnipeg (97).

Next up for Red Deer is game 63 of 68 en route to the WHL playoffs, next Saturday, April 2, at home to the Central Division-leading Edmonton Oil Kings. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND Radio starting at 6:30.
