Two Sylvan Lake teens in hospital after possible carbon monoxide poisoning

UPDATE – March 26, 12 p.m.

RCMP say they’ve spoken to the families, who share that the boys are doing well.

ORIGINAL – March 25, 3:16 p.m.

Two teenage boys from Sylvan Lake are in hospital in life-threatening condition as of early Friday afternoon.

Cpl. Derek Rose with Sylvan Lake RCMP says the initial investigation indicates the two boys, 16 and 17-years-old, had slept in their car Thursday night into Friday morning in the parking lot at H.J. Cody High School.

When they woke up, Rose says, they had begun to warm their vehicle. That’s when mechanical failure is believed to have caused the boys to be exposed to carbon monoxide, rendering them both unconscious.

RCMP, along with fire and EMS services, arrived to the scene just before 10 a.m. STARS Air Ambulance transported one male to the Stollery in Edmonton, while the other was taken to hospital in Edmonton via ground ambulance.

The vehicle, a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta, has been taken in for further inspection.

Rose says the incident is entirely non-suspicious.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved,” says Kurt Sacher, Chinook’s Edge School Division superintendent.

Sacher notes Friday was a non-instructional day for the division, and that counselling for the students’ peers began Friday and will continue into next week.

An update is anticipated on Saturday.
