The Red Deer Rebels continued their winning ways over the Medicine Hat Tigers Friday night with a 3-0 win at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

Red Deer’s fourth straight victory against Medicine Hat puts the team in a positive spot after back-to-back losses against Lethbridge last weekend. Leading the league with 96 points, the Rebels Arshdeep Bains also reached another milestone with his 250th game to open the scoring.

The first period was a slow one with just one power play opportunity for each team but no goals scored. However, at the 20-minute mark, the Tigers and the Rebels both received a penalty leaving them to begin the second period with one man down each.

Red Deer doubled Medicine Hat with shots on goal 10-5 after 20 minutes.

In the second, the Rebels broke the ice, scoring later into the period at the 14:05 mark. Arshdeep Bains scored his 35th goal of the season and the eventual game winner on Medicine Hat goaltender Beckett Langkow. Assisted by Carter Anderson and power play partner Ben King, the Rebels now led 1-0.

Red Deer once again greatly outshot the Tigers 21-6 in the second period for a two period total of 31-11.

In the third, Red Deer was no longer playing around. Jhett Larson scored his 10th goal of the WHL season just two and a half minutes in. Now 2-0, the assists were made by Hunter Mayo and Arshdeep Bains.

Then at 8:22, it seemed like the puck went through the legs of all players before reaching the Tigers net. The Rebels’ Matteo Fabrizi scored his second goal this season, with assists by Hunter Mayo and Liam Keeler. The home team now led 3-0.

Once again, the Rebels dominated in shots on goal in the third period by a count of 12-2, for a three period total of 43-13.

The Rebels went 0/4 on the power play, while Medicine Hat went 0/2 with the man advantage.

The third star of the game went to the Tigers’ goalie Beckett Langkow. The second star went to the Rebels’ Arshdeep Bains for his one goal and one assist on the evening. The first star went to Red Deer’s Hunter Mayo for his two assists.

Mayo’s star this evening was made extra special, being his mother’s birthday, who watched from the stands.

“It was pretty awesome. She’s probably pretty happy about that so I’m glad I could do that for her,” he said.

Rebels coach Steve Konowalchuk was happy the team jumped back from last weekend’s losses even after a slow start in the first period.

“I thought our guys were pushing and pushing the pace in the first period. We kept up the pace and maybe that started to show more in the second and the third period. We had some scoring chances in the first but definitely as the game went on we had better and better scoring chances but we had to stick with it,” he said.

Mayo also hopes the win helps put the team in a high ranking in the WHL.

“It was a good win, a good two points there for us. Hopefully we can carry on. We’re trying to get to third place here so hopefully we can keep going,” he said.

The win puts the Rebels’ record at 40-17-2-2 with 84 points, while the loss for Medicine Hat drops the Tigers record to 11-44-3-1 with 26 points.

The Rebels are back on home ice Saturday night against the Swift Current Broncos. Face-off is at 7 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND radio.
