Maryview School Grade 4s connect with Taiwanese class on respecting Earth

A Grade 4 class at Red Deer’s Maryview School recently learned about environmental protection alongside some friends from the other side of the globe.

Tammy Davis’s class virtually worked with a fellow Grade 4 class in Taiwan, as part of a competition put on by well-renowned Taiwanese magazine ‘Commonwealth,’ and the country’s education minister.

The competition involved using a creative curriculum to focus on taking action to protect nature, and won an award from the magazine.

“When I was offered the opportunity to work with Daniel (Wu) and his students from Taiwan, I jumped at the offer. I love giving my students the chance to meet with many different people from the community and from around the world, thus developing Global Awareness. The project Daniel set up fit beautifully with what we were already doing in our Science class – helping to teach others about the importance of being environmentally aware and looking after the planet,” says Davis.

“My students adored working with Daniel and learning about Taiwan – he even made boba tea for them to try! The students were so eager to make videos for his students in Taiwan and to watch those that his students had made.”

Daniel Wu, chief of international education for Hui-Wen High School, who worked with the class in-person, said, “The most important and exciting component of the project was that the students learned together about the same topic but from the perspective of both countries.”

Specific actions discussed by students include working harder to avoid putting plastic into our oceans, and to be more conscious of all the natural resources we use.

Davis adds that the work was done using software called FlipGrid, and that her students came to recognize that children all over the world have an interest and concern in pollution and trying to be more aware of what they are doing to Earth.
