RDP Athletics Recap: Wins send teams to national championships

What happened this past week in RDP Athletics… some big results, that’s what!

Queens Volleyball | ACAC Championship | Friday, March 11 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens defeated The King’s University Eagles in five sets, advancing to the gold medal match (23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19 and 15-5). Queens outside hitter Tess Pearman had a match high 18 kills. Libero Kaylee Domoney, a Kinesiology General student, recorded 25 digs. North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game Jaiden Ferguson provided a spark on the left side, accumulating 13 kills, 10 digs, two assists, one ace and a block.

The RDP Queens then downed the Lakeland College Rustlers in four sets, winning ACAC gold (25-23, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-20). This is the 20th conference title in the history of the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball program. North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game Pearman had 13 kills, 10 digs, one block, one assist and an ace. Ferguson contributed 13 kills from the left. Domoney was outstanding, recording 17 digs. The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens will compete at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship from March 25-27 in Prince Edward Island. Holland College will host the event.

Kings Volleyball | ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship | Friday, March 11 | NAIT The RDP

Kings swept The King’s University Eagles (25-22, 25-23 and 25-19) in an ACAC semi-final. Six-foot-five middle Cody Boulding was named the Kings Player of the Game. The Bachelor of Kinesiology student totaled four kills, two digs and one block. Red Deer’s Brett Lower had 10 kills and three of the Polytechnic’s 12 service aces.

Kings Volleyball | ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship | Saturday, March 12 | NAIT

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings defeated the host NAIT Ooks in four sets to earn their 20th ACAC gold medal (25-22, 24-26, 25-22 and 27-25). Kings Player of the Game Reece Lehman had a team high 18 kills with an efficient 0.577 hitting percentage. The Bachelor of Kinesiology student from Red Deer also recorded five of the Kings’ 10 service aces. The Kings will participate in the CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship from March 25-27 in Québec. Cégep Limoilou will host the event.

Kings Basketball | ACAC Championship | Friday, March 11 | SAIT

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team worked hard, but dropped a 100-88 decision to the Keyano College Huskies. ACAC Men’s Basketball South Player of the Year Tyronn King recorded a double-double with a team high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Eduardo Crespo, ACAC South Rookie of the Year, added 24 points. Fifth-year Cody White chipped in with 17 points.

Kings Basketball | ACAC Championship | Saturday, March 12 | SAIT

Red Deer’s White helped to lead a late charge against the Lakeland College Rustlers, but the Kings couldn’t fully complete the rally. The Rustlers picked up an 82-79 decision and ACAC bronze. The RDP Kings finished fourth in the 15 team league. Kings Player of the Game White accumulated 15 points and three rebounds. King led the Polytechnic with 22 points. Crespo added 17. Rocky Mountain House’s Payton Baltzer had 10 points.
