March 12: Open House and Donation Drive

Dress for Success Central Alberta re-opening in new Capstone location this weekend

In the spirit of International Women’s Day that took place this week, the women of Red Deer are being given an affordable option to dress for success without financial stress.

Dress for Success Central Alberta, a local non-profit, is having a grand re-opening at their new location (#5 – 5571 45 Street) on March 12. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., they are inviting the community to join their Open House and donation drive in celebration.

Board Director Lee Ann Waines believes that this is an important turning point for the organization.

“We are thrilled to be moving to our new location within Capstone. The downtown fire, that occurred last year, significantly impacted our ability to provide services at a time when the need has increased,” she said. “We look forward to doing even more for our clients and our community, with a more accessible and open space.”

On Thanksgiving weekend 2021, a fire broke out in the adjacent downtown building, causing the organization to temporarily shut down and later move due to smoke damage.

The organization says the pandemic has not only impacted their ability to fundraise, which supports their initiatives alongside grants and donations, but has also created devastating effects on employment for women.

With the expenses incurred as a result, the organization is hoping to raise $10,000 on March 12 which will be used to support client programming and operations. As well, new or gently used women’s professional and business-casual clothing, shoes and accessories will be accepted at the new boutique location. All donated items are required to be clean, ready-to-wear, suitable to wear to a job interview or in a business setting, and not more than three-years-old.

As part of the event, local Scotiabank branches are sponsoring the day and providing more than 30 volunteers to help collect clothing and financial donations.

Lacey Neal, Branch Manager of Scotiabank Rocky Mountain House, says she is proud to support and celebrate the re-opening.

“Through ScotiaRISE, our national partnership with Dress for Success Canada supports the empowerment of women, enabling them to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and development tools to help women thrive in work and life,” says Neal.

The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of women in need by providing professional attire, a network of support, and career development tools to help women thrive in work and life. Each client referred to Dress for Success Central Alberta for suiting receives a personal styling session, leaving with one complete interview outfit that includes shoes, accessories, and a handbag at no cost. After securing employment, the client is encouraged to return for a week’s worth of professional clothing.

Those interested in volunteering are invited to attend, where they can tour the space and sign up for future volunteer roles.
