The defending Alberta Football League champion Central Alberta Buccaneers are continuing a busy off-season this weekend.

The Lacombe Athletic Park Association (LAPA) is hosting its annual gala on Saturday to raise funds for an expansion to the running track.

In fact, former Buccaneer and current Edmonton Elk Tanner Green will be joined by teammate Cole Nelson and Calgary Stampeder Calvin McCarty to sign autographs from 2-3 p.m. in the lobby of the Lacombe Memorial Centre on Saturday. The event is free, though donations for the track expansion are welcome.

The gala on Saturday, meanwhile, will be 70s themed and limited tickets are still available at: https://www.lacombeathleticpark.ca/

On Sunday afternoon the Buccaneers will hold their third indoor workout at The Dome in Red Deer. Anybody interested in trying out for the team is encouraged to take part. There is a $10 fee to drop in and the only equipment needed are cleats and gloves. The workout runs from 1-3 p.m.

The fourth and final indoor workout will be Sunday Mar. 27 from 1-3 p.m. at The Dome in Red Deer. The first two indoor practices took place Feb. 6 and Feb. 13.

Following the Mar. 27 workout, the Buccaneers’ Annual General Meeting will take place via Zoom at 4:30. The AGM will feature information on fees, travel information, and the schedule which will all be available in one place. The link for the meeting can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/cabucs/

Also, the Buccaneers will once again hold a blood drive this year and the team will compete against the Red Deer Titans women’s rugby team and the Calgary Rage women’s football team to see which team can donate the most pints of blood. More details coming soon.

The Bucs Spring Training Camp is tentatively scheduled to run from April 19 – May 6 every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Sunday May 7 will be the Spring Camp wrap-up and fundraiser for the Lacombe Food Bank that will also coincide with the grand opening of the new Lacombe Athletic Park.

The Buccaneers quest to becoming back-to-back champions will kick off June 4 on the road against the Airdrie Irish. The team’s home opener is scheduled for July 9 against the Edmonton Elite. All of the Buccaneers home games will be played at Setter’s Place in Red Deer.
