King, Bains lead Rebels third period surge over Pats for 4th straight win

Connor Bedard and the Regina Pats let one slip away Saturday, and the Red Deer Rebels picked up their third straight comeback win, knocking off their foes 6-4 at the Centrium.

Coming into the matchup, Red Deer had won both meetings this season, and by a combined score of 7-4. Both of those games happened in November.

Red Deer (32-15-2-1) also came in second in the Central Division, while the Pats (19-25-1-1) are duking it out for last place in the East Division.

The Rebels got on the board first, Jace Isley (11th) scoring at 6:14, with Talon Brigley and Jayden Grubbe getting helpers.

Red Deer made it 2-0 at 16:54 of the first when Kai Uchacz (10th) put one past Tees, Alberta native Drew Sim.

The second period was full of goals, mostly for the visitors though.

The hype-train that is Bedard (33rd) got Regina’s first, and on the power play, at 1:17.

Ryker Evans (13th) drew the Pats even at 8:26.

Then at 11:09, Zane Rowan (4th) put Regina in the lead 3-2.

Red Deer finally stemmed the tide at 18:01, when Ben King (40th) added to his league-leading goal tally, Isley assisting, and it was 3-3 late in the second.

But before the period was out, Regina struck again, Adam McNutt (2nd) beating Chase Coward to give the Pats a 4-3 advantage with twenty minutes left in regulation.

At 10:14 of the third, and McNutt in the box for holding, Liam Keeler (22nd) tied things back up for Red Deer on the power play, King and Arshdeep Bains assisting.

Then, with 7:16 remaining in regulation, the team’s horse, that being King (41st), scored his second of the night, once again on the power play. Bains and Christoffer Sedoff assisted.

Bains (26th), getting his third point of the period, then scored an empty-netter to ice the 6-4 win for Red Deer.

Bains and King are red hot, and that’s an understatement.

King had two goals and one assist tonight, and has scored twice in three straight games. He also has four straight multi-point games, and 18 points in his last 10. King leads the WHL in goals with 41, and sits third in points with 72 in 51 games.

Bains had one goal and two assists on the night to vault him into a tie once again for first in the league with 76 points, equal to Kyle Crnkovic of Saskatoon. Bains has four straight multi-point games, in all of which he notched multiple assists. Over his last 10 games, he has 20 points. Bains also leads the league in assists with 50 in 51 games.

King was named first star on the night, Connor Bedard with a goal and an assist earned second star honours, and Christoffer Sedoff was given third star.

With the win, Chase Coward is now 14-8-0-1 on the season, while his counterpart Drew Sim fell to 3-10-0-1 on the year.

The Rebels also finish their five-game homestand 4-1, their only loss coming against Edmonton in the opener, 4-0 back on Feb. 11. Red Deer trail Edmonton by 10 points for first in the Central, but sit comfortably in second, 23 points ahead of Swift Current with 51 of 68 games played.

Next up for the Rebels is the first of four straight away from home, starting March 1 in Medicine Hat. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND Radio starting at 6:50.
