The Rebels Deer Rebels defeated the Prince Albert Raiders 3-2 in a nail-biting final period Friday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

The Rebels last played the Raiders on Feb. 4 in a victorious 2-1 match at the Art Hauser Centre. The win was Red Deer’s third in-a-row, all coming on home ice.

The Rebels’ Ben King furthered his position Friday as the leading goal scorer in the WHL this season with a total of 39 goals. The three players behind him, meantime, each have 34 goals. Meanwhile, King’s teammate Arshdeep Bains maintained his title as leading the league in assists, adding two more Friday for a total of 48.

The first period saw the Raiders capitalize with the man advantage when the Rebels’ Jackson van de Leest was sent to the box for high sticking. Sloan Stanick scored his 16th goal of the season on netminder Connor Ungar just over three and a half minutes into the period. Ozzy Wiesblatt and Nolan Allan assisted on the power play goal.

The first period ended with Prince Albert leading 1-0, and the Raiders outshooting Red Deer 7-6.

In the second period, Red Deer was able to capitalize on a powerplay opportunity of their own. Ben King scored his 38th goal of the season at the 6:20 mark on goaltender Max Hildebrand, following a high sticking penalty to Prince Albert’s Keaton Sorensen. Christoffer Sedoff and Arshdeep Bains chipped in with assists.

With the score tied 1-1 after 40 minutes, Red Deer outshot the Raiders 17-7 in the second period, for a two period total of 23-14 in favour of the Rebels.

The third period saw Red Deer in the penalty box early on with Frantisek Formanek called for checking to the head. Prince Albert’s Landon Kosior then scored on the power play, just before the three and a half minute mark, giving the Raiders a 2-1 lead. It was Kosior’s 13th goal of the season and assisted by Ozzy Wiesblatt and Nolan Allan, again.

Playing hard in the final few minutes of the game, Red Deer’s Kyle Masters scored his third goal of the season at 15:52. It was assisted by Dallon Melin and tied the game 2-2.

Shortly after, the Rebels’ Ben King scored his 39th of the season and second of the game at 17:29 to give the Rebels a 3-2 lead. The eventual game winning goal was assisted by his dynamic duo partner Arshdeep Bains. The goal, however, spawned a major spearing penalty and game misconduct to Prince Albert’s Ozzy Wiesblatt.

While the Raiders were one man down, they still pulled goalie Max Hildebrand at 18:45 in an attempt to tie the game, but to no avail.

The Rebels finished with a 3-2 win and dominated on the shot clock in the third, outshooting the Raiders 14-3 in the final 20 minutes and 37-17 overall.

With the man advantage, Prince Albert went 2/5 on the night, while the Rebels went 1/4 on the power play.

Rebels Coach Steve Konowalchuk was pleased with the team’s “good win” and ability to turn the game around, but did focus on areas of improvement for the next game.

“Still got to grow in the direction of taking penalties; we got to grow and be better. We made that game a lot tougher on ourselves because of the penalties we took,” he said.

The third star of the game went to the Rebels’ Kyle Masters, while the second star went to the Raiders’ goaltender Max Hildebrand. The first star went to Red Deer’s Ben King for his two goals on the night.

The win brings Red Deer’s record to 32-15-2-1 and 67 points, while the loss for Prince Albert drops them to 19-27-2-1 and 41 points.

The Rebels remain on home ice at the Peavey Mart Centrium Saturday night when they host the Regina Pats. Faceoff is 7 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND radio.
