Central Alberta Teachers Convention underway

Feb 24, 2022 | 11:11 AM

As thousands of central Alberta students continue enjoying some time off this week, local teachers are busy attending the 2022 Central Alberta Teachers Convention.

The virtual event being held Feb. 24-25, covers the Central Alberta Districts of Red Deer City Local No. 60, Red Deer Catholic Local No. 80, Timberline Local No. 9, Wolf Creek Local No. 3, and Chinook’s Edge Local No. 17.

The conference features different workshops for teachers to attend depending on what subjects and grades they teach. The workshops have been split up into four divisions depending on grade level.

Officials say the workshops cover a wide variety of topics, from ways to keep students engaged in learning in an online environment, to the importance of Indigenous studies and ways to manage stress.

The convention also allows school staff to compare notes and exchange ideas to improve both teaching methods, and the overall learning experience for students.

This year, the Alberta Teacher’s Retirement Fund Board (ATRF) will not be hosting individual pension interviews that it has done in the past at in-person conventions. Instead, the ATRF will be conducting a Pre-retirement workshop on Feb. 26 for any central Alberta teachers that may be choosing to retire in the next few years.

Teachers will also be keeping a close eye on the UCP’s budget announcement on Feb. 24, to see how the Alberta government will spend money in the education sector.
