Trial dates set for suspects charged in central Alberta police chase

Trial dates have been set next month for four people charged in a central Alberta police chase involving a wanted man last year.

Brandon Joel Dennehy, 28, Sarah Lightning, 24, Ocean William Storm Hillbach, 24, Raven (Soosay) Buffalo, 21, all of the Samson Cree Nation, are scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin provincial court Mar. 24-25, 2022.

It was Nov. 2, 2021, when Maskwacis RCMP were making attempts to locate Brandon Dennehy on outstanding warrants.

Following up on leads from the public, an officer spotted a vehicle associated with Dennehy.

A traffic stop was attempted, however, the vehicle fled. Police deployed a spike belt which successfully stopped the vehicle.

Dennehy, as well as three other individuals were charged jointly with the following criminal code offences:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession of prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number

Dennehy was also charged with the following criminal code offences:

  • Flight from a peace officer (X2)
  • Breach of a firearms prohibition (X2)
  • Dangerous Driving (X2)
  • Fail to comply with a release order (X2)

Hillbach was also charged with the following criminal code offences:

  • Breach of a firearms prohibition (X3)

Lighting was also charged with the following criminal code offences:

  • Breach of a firearms prohibition
  • Fail to comply with a release order (X4)

Buffalo was also charged with the following criminal code offences:

  • Fail to comply with a release order (X2)

Dennehy, Lightning, and Buffalo were remanded into custody, while Hillbach was released on multiple conditions.

Maskwacis RCMP announced their search for Dennehy on Oct. 30, 2021, noting he was on a release order for charges stemming from a robbery and kidnapping. It’s alleged that on Oct. 27, 2021, he cut off an electronic monitoring ankle device.
