Ponoka’s Maddison Pearman makes Olympic debut with Women’s 1500m speed skating

While Ponoka-native Maddison Pearman did not win gold at the Women’s 1500m speed skating race, she kept a big smile on her face throughout her debut to the Olympic stage.

The 26-year-old competed on Monday, Feb. 7 at 4:30 p.m. in Beijing against Ahenaer Adake of China.

In the four lap race, Pearman started strong, completed the first 300m in just 26.01 seconds, ahead of Adake by 0.02 seconds. Her second lap reaching 700m, however, took 29.22 seconds, gradually tailing behind. The third lap hitting 1100m in distance took 30.97 and the final lap took 33.69 seconds for a finishing time of 1:59:89.

Pearman finished just over one second after Adake who completed the race at 1:58: 59.

Finishing in 24th place overall, the young athlete has three more competitions ahead on her Olympic journey.

Her schedule is as follows:

  • Sunday, February 13 at 6 a.m MST.: Speed Skating Women’s 500 metres
  • Thursday, February 17 at 1:30 a.m MST.: Speed Skating Women’s 1000 metres final
  • Saturday, February 19 at 12 a.m MST.: Speed Skating Mass Start

Meantime, Red Deer curler Jocelyn Peterman is also set to play at the Olympics for the very first time for Team Canada this Thursday, Feb. 10 at 5:05 a.m. (MST) against South Korea.

Her schedule will be as follows (MST):

  • Thursday, February 10 at 11:05 p.m.: Women’s Round Robin Session 3 versus Japan
  • Friday, February 11 at 6:05 p.m.: Women’s Round Robin Session 4 versus Sweden
  • Saturday, February 12 at 11:05 p.m.: Women’s Round Robin Session 6 versus Switzerland
  • Sunday, February 13 at 6:05 p.m.: Women’s Round Robin Session 7 versus Russian Olympic Committee
