Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics has announced its RDP Athletes of the Week:

1. Kaylee Domoney – Queens Volleyball

Hometown – Red Deer, Alberta. Kinesiology General (5th year)

Kaylee Domoney was rock solid defensively for the first place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team, once again. Domoney’s tenacity and skill on the defensive side helped her team quickly transition to offence. The two-time Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Volleyball South All-Conference libero helped her team earn a pair of road victories, keeping its undefeated record intact (14-0).

On Thursday, the fifth-year helped lead the Queens to a four set win over the SAIT Trojans (29-27, 25-16, 23-25 and 25-22). Domoney contributed seven digs and two assists and was recognized as the RDP Queens Player of the Game.

Then in Saskatchewan, the Kinesiology General student played a significant role in the Queens’ four set decision over the Briercrest College Clippers (25-21, 25-18, 13-25 and 25-19). Domoney impressively accumulated 18 digs and two assists.

The talented student-athlete from Red Deer is expected to play a key role in the Queens’ 2022 playoff run.

2. Chase Haygarth – Kings Hockey

Hometown – Lloydminster, Alberta. Business Administration General (1st year)

Chase Haygarth had a superb weekend for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team. The first-year student-athlete made significant contributions in the Kings’ two wins over the Portage College Voyageurs. He was instrumental on the Kings’ penalty kill, which stopped 10 of the Voyageurs’ 11 opportunities with the extra skater. Offensively, the Business Administration General student contributed four points over two games.

In Thursday’s 6-3 home victory, the five-foot-11 forward assisted on his team’s opening goal and then scored the fifth. Haygarth was named the North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game for his outstanding performance.

Then in Saturday’s 6-3 road win, the former member of the Flin Flon Bombers scored his team’s fifth goal, which was shorthanded. He added an assist on the Kings’ sixth goal.

This season, Haygarth has played a significant role in the Kings’ 81.8 per cent success rate on the penalty kill, which ranks third in the league.

This Week in Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics

This week the Red Deer Polytechnic Curling team will host Bonspiel #2. Both Volleyball teams will compete against the Ambrose University Lions and Lethbridge College Kodiaks. The Kings and Queens Basketball teams will play the SAIT Trojans and St. Mary’s University Lightning at home. The RDP Kings and Queens Hockey teams will challenge the NAIT Ooks.

No spectators will be permitted at home games until further notice. Select games will be broadcast online through ACAC TV for fans to continue to show support for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens. Some ACAC games can also be viewed on channel 1998 on TELUS Optik TV.

Curling | Saturday, February 12 | Bonspiel #2 | The Pidherney Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Curling team will host ACAC Bonspiel #2 at The Pidherney Centre in Red Deer.

Queens Volleyball | Thursday, February 10 | 6 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The top seed Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (14-0) will play the third place Ambrose University Lions (7-7). The Queens are the only undefeated team in ACAC Women’s Volleyball and rank first in the league with 12.02 kills per set.

Queens Volleyball | Saturday, February 12 | 2 pm | Lethbridge College

In the final regular season match, the RDP Queens and second place Lethbridge College Kodiaks (8-4) will compete in the afternoon.

To align with new Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship dates, the start of the ACAC playoffs have been pushed back to March 4. The final four women’s volleyball teams will battle for the ACAC Championship title on March 11 and 12.

The CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship will take place from March 24 to 27 in Prince Edward Island where Holland College will host the event.

Kings Volleyball | Thursday, February 10 | 8 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The first place Kings Volleyball team (10-4) will host the Ambrose University Lions (2-12).

First-year Brett Lower sits fourth in the league in kills per set (3.21), total kills (167), and hitting percentage (0.468).

Kings Volleyball | Saturday, February 12 | 4 pm | Lethbridge College

The Kings will wrap up the regular season against the third place Kodiaks (8-5) in Lethbridge.

The start of the ACAC Men’s Volleyball playoffs have been delayed until March 4 to align with new dates for the national championship. On March 11 and 12, the final four teams will compete for the conference title.

The CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship will be held from March 24 to 27 in Québec, Québec. Cégep Limilou will host the event at Limoilou’s Sports Complex.

Queens Basketball | Friday, February 11 | 6 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team (6-4) will tip-off against the SAIT Trojans (7-6) at home.

The Queens have won their past two games over the Trojans and are the top rebounding team in the league (45.3 per game).

Queens Basketball | Saturday, February 12 | 6 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDP Queens will challenge the St. Mary’s University Lightning (11-1) at Red Deer Polytechnic.

The start of the ACAC Women’s Basketball playoffs have been moved to March 4. On March 11 and 12, the final four ACAC teams will compete for the championship.

Vancouver Island University (VIU) will host the 2022 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship from March 24 to 27.

Kings Basketball | Friday, February 11 | 8 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team (6-4) will play the Trojans (9-2).

Fifth-year Tyronn King continues to lead the ACAC in scoring (27.8 points per game).

Kings Basketball | Saturday, February 12 | 8 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings will entertain the St. Mary’s University Lightning (7-3) at Red Deer Polytechnic.

The ACAC Men’s Basketball playoffs have been delayed until March 4. The final four ACAC teams will compete for the championship on March 11 and 12.

Humber College will host the CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship in Etobicoke, Ontario from March 24 to 27.

Queens Hockey | Monday, February 7 | 7 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In a rare Monday game, the first place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team (7-1) will host the second seed NAIT Ooks (6-2).

The Queens have the top ranked penalty kill (93.3%).

Queens Hockey | Friday, February 11 | 7 pm | NAIT

The Ooks will host the Queens.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, February 12 | 7 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Queens and Ooks will meet again at Red Deer Polytechnic.

Kings Hockey | Friday, February 11 | 7 pm | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The third place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team (6-1-2-1) will face-off against the top seed NAIT Ooks (8-0-0-0).

The Kings boast the second-best offence in the ACAC (4.10 goals per game).

In a rematch, the RDP Kings will battle the Ooks in Edmonton.
