Rebels finish eastern road trip with loss to Wheat Kings

Following back-to-back victories in Saskatchewan over the weekend, the Red Deer Rebels finished their eastern road trip with a 3-1 loss to the Wheat Kings in Brandon Tuesday night.

Both teams saw multiple power play opportunities slip through their fingers in the first period, which finished tied at 0-0 and the Wheat Kings outshooting the Rebels 12-8..

Red Deer opened the scoring in the second period though when Jhett Larson scored his ninth goal of the seasonat 15:47 on Brandon goaltender Ethan Kruger. Ben King and Arshdeep Bains assisted on the play.

The period ended with Red Deer leading 1-0 and both teams managing seven shots on net for a two-period total of 19-15 in favour of Brandon to that point.

The Wheaties got on the board in the third period though, when Ridly Greig scored on Rebels netminder Chase Coward at the 10:55 mark to earn his 20th goal of the season – assisted by Riley Ginnell.

Now tied 1-1, the Wheat Kings quickly doubled their score at 14:31 when Red Deer native Nate Danielson scored his 12th goal of the season, aided by Riley Ginnell and Chad Nychuk. It would later prove to be the eventual game winner.

However, Brandon’s Landon Roberts was then sent to the box shortly after for a cross-checking penalty. Now down a man with a 2-1 lead, the Wheat Kings managed to score short handed at 17:17 when Ridly Greig scored his second goal of the night and 21st of the season to make it 3-1 Brandon. Vincent Iorio assisted on the play.

Pulling their goalie soon afterwards in an attempt to tie the game, the Rebels Kalan Lind received a minor penalty for having too many men on the ice, with goalie Chase Coward sent back to his net, maintaining the game’s score of 3-1 in favor of the Wheat Kings.

While The Rebels outshot the Wheat Kings 13-9 in the third period, shots on goal finished equal (28-28) after 60 minutes.

Both teams were unable to find the back of the net on their power play opportunities, with Red Deer going 0/4 and Brandon 0/6 with the man advantage.

Winning on home ice, the Wheat Kings received all three stars on the night. Goalie Ethan Kruger receiving the third star and Riley Ginnell the second for his two assists. Ridly Greig received the game’s first star for his two goals.

The loss drops the Rebels’ record to 29-14-2-1 with 61 points, while the Wheat Kings improve to 21-14-2-2.

The Rebels return to home ice Friday evening, Feb. 11, at the Peavey Mart Centrium for a 7:00 p.m. M.T. face-off against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
