Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics Recap

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens may have had a few bumpy road games, but came out strong overall this past week.

The Polytechnic Queens Basketball team defeated the SAIT Trojans twice. The Kings Basketball team was downed by the Trojans. The Queens Hockey team blanked the NAIT Ooks and moved into first. The RDP Kings Hockey team captured the two-game set over the Portage College Voyageurs. The Queens Volleyball team picked up wins over the Trojans and Clippers on the road. Missing some key student-athletes, the Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team couldn’t get by SAIT and Briercrest College.

Queens Basketball | Friday, February 4 | SAIT

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team picked up a 78-76 victory over the SAIT Trojans. Queens Player of the Game Sophie Melin led her squad with 24 points.

Queens Basketball | Saturday, February 5 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Queens (6-4) defeated the Trojans 62-53 at Red Deer Polytechnic. Red Deer’s Keanna Richards accumulated eight points, eight rebounds and two assists.

Kings Basketball | Friday, February 4 | SAIT

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team fell 89-58 to the Trojans. Six-foot-five Kevin Szymanek had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Kings.

Kings Basketball | Saturday, February 5 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings (6-4) worked hard but dropped a 79-67 decision to the Trojans at home. First-year Eduardo Crespo totaled 20 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists for the Kings.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, February 5 | NAIT

The first place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team (7-1) blanked the NAIT Ooks 1-0. Calgary’s Mary Hirsch scored the lone goal for the Queens. Madison Fox, a Bachelor of Science Nursing student, earned the shutout.

Kings Hockey | Thursday, February 3 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team defeated the Portage College Voyageurs 6-3. Mathieu Lapointe, Ryley Smith, Jacob Kendall, Tucker Scantlebury, Chase Haygarth and Chance Longjohn scored for the Polytechnic.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, February 5 | Portage College

The third seed RDP Kings (6-1-2-1) downed the Voyageurs 6-3 on the road. Sherwood Park’s Erik Miller scored a pair of goals for the Kings. Jacob Kendall, Jaxon Steele, Chase Haygarth and Ryley Smith added singles.

Queens Volleyball | Thursday, February 3 | SAIT

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens defeated the SAIT Trojans in four sets (29-27, 25-16, 23-25 and 25-22). Queens libero Kaylee Domoney, a Kinesiology General student, recorded seven digs and two assists.

Queens Volleyball | Saturday, February 5 | Briercrest College

The undefeated RDP Queens (14-0) earned a four set victory over the Briercrest College Clippers (25-21, 25-18, 13-25 and 25-19). Sylvan Lake’s Anna Carlson accumulated 10 kills, nine digs, two blocks and a service ace for the Polytechnic.

The Kings Volleyball team dropped a three set decision to the SAIT Trojans (23-25, 19-25 and 20-25). Red Deer’s Brett Lower totaled nine kills, six digs, three assists, one ace and one block.

The first place Kings (10-4) dropped a four set decision to the Clippers on the road (25-19, 32-34, 19-25 and 18-25). Six-foot-three outside hitter Reece Lehman recorded nine kills, three digs and one block.
