Rebels start road trip in the win column against Raiders

Feb 4, 2022 | 11:29 PM

The Red Deer Rebels started their eastern road trip right, with a 2-1 win against the Prince Albert Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre Friday evening.

The first period offered power play opportunities for Prince Albert due to some fisticuffs, but to no avail for the Raiders.

After 20 minutes, the Raiders outshot the Rebels 12-7.

The second period is where all the action took place as Red Deer’s Hunter Mayor scored the first goal for the team at the 11:34 mark on netminder Tikhon Chaika. Just his second goal this season, it was assisted by Kalan Lind.

Just a few minutes later, the Rebels’ Ben King scored his 34th goal of the season at 15:23, with Dallon Melin assisting on the play and putting the Rebels up 2-0. It later proved to be the eventual game winner.

However, before the period came to an end, Prince Albert capitalized on a power play opportunity when Ozzy Wiesblatt beat Rebels netminder Chase Coward at 17:58 to cut the Rebels lead to 2-1. It was Wiesblatt’s ninth goal of the season, with Sloan Stanick and Keaton Sorensen assisting on the goal which followed a roughing penalty to Red Deer’s Dallon Melin.

The period ended with the Rebels having three times as many shots on goal (15-5).

There was no scoring in the third period, despite Prince Albert pulling goalie Tikhon Chaika at the 18:19 mark in an attempt to tie the game before time ran out.

The third period saw an equal amount of shots on goal for both teams (7-7), for a three period total of 29-24 in favour of the Rebels.

Meantime, the Rebels went 0/2 with the man advantage while the Raiders went 1/3 on the power play.

The third and second stars of the game were given to Prince Albert’s goalie Tikhon Chaika and goal scorer for the evening, Ozzy Wiesblatt, respectively. The first star was awarded to the Rebels’ second goal scorer, Ben King.

The win brings the Rebels’ record to 28-13-2-1, remaining second in the Central Division. The Raiders however, are in last place in the Eastern Division with a record of 15-23-1-1.

The Rebels will remain in Saskatchewan for tomorrow night’s game, taking on the Blades in Saskatoon at the SaskTel Centre. Face-off is Saturday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. MT (7 p.m. CT).
