Co-Accused With Trial Date

Stay of proceedings in central Alberta drive-by shooting

Feb 3, 2022 | 10:28 AM

There has been a stay of proceedings for one of two men charged in a drive-by shooting in central Alberta last summer.

Shayden Trey Rain, 20, of Maskwacis, was facing eight counts, including two of attempted murder with a firearm, two counts of discharge firearm with intent, two counts of pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and using a firearm in the commission of an offence.

The stay, however, means legal proceedings in Rain’s matters have been halted indefinitely.

Rain’s co-accused, Jerry Lawrence James Johnson, 20, of Maskwacis, is scheduled for trial on Mar. 21, in Wetaskiwin provincial court.

Johnson is charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm and fail to comply with a release order in the Aug. 20, 2021 incident.

At approximately 3 a.m. that day, Maskwacis RCMP responded to a shooting in the Townsite area of the Ermineskin Cree Nation. Early reports indicated that multiple shots were fired and a vehicle fled the scene.

Police responded to the area and located two females with serious life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to hospital for medical treatment.

Officers identified two suspects involved in the shooting, with Johnson arrested and charged first in September 2021. A warrant was issued for the second suspect who was later arrested on Oct. 4, 2021.
