RDP Athletes of the Week

Feb 3, 2022 | 11:53 AM

Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics is proud to announce the Athletes of the Week for Jan. 31:

Amy Szymanek – Queens Basketball
Hometown – Stauffer, Alberta
Bachelor of Education Middle School (3rd year)

Amy Szymanek had an incredible weekend on the court for the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team. Displaying a consistent and relentless work ethic, the third-year led the Queens in two weekend road games, recording a pair of double-doubles.

In Friday’s 84-75 win, the Bachelor of Education Middle School student contributed 21 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and two assists. Szymanek was efficient, hitting 7-of-14 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. For her outstanding performance, Szymanek was named the Queens Player of the Game.

Despite the Queens dropping Saturday’s rematch 69-56, the student-athlete from Stauffer gave her team another heart and soul effort. Szymanek led the Queens in scoring, once again. She finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, one block and an assist. She was successful on 50 per cent (8-of-16) of her shots from the field and 75 per cent (3-of-4) from the free throw line.

The RDP Queens (4-4) have played the fewest number of games in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Basketball South Division and remain in the playoff picture as the fifth seed. The top six squads will advance to the playoffs.

Tyronn King – Kings Basketball
Hometown – Toronto, Ontario
Legal Assistant (5th year)

Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball’s Tyronn King entered the two-game series against the Briercrest College Clippers as the ACAC Men’s Basketball leading scorer and another exceptional weekend kept the fifthyear at the top (30.5 points per game). King recorded a double-double in each road decision.

In Friday’s 88-77 win, King remarkably scored a game high 36 points, along with 12 rebounds, four steals, and two assists. He was perfect (6-of-6) from the free throw line and effective from the field (13-of-25) and threepoint range (4-of-9). The Legal Assistant student was named the Kings Player of the Game.

The talented six-foot-one guard sparked a 100-83 Kings’ victory on Saturday. He contributed a team high 22 points. King added 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Once again, the student-athlete from Toronto was efficient from the free throw line (6-of-6) and field (8-of-19).

The RDP Kings (6-2) sit fourth in the ACAC South Division despite playing fewer games than several teams.
