RDP Athletics Recap: Jan. 28-29

The past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team defeated the Briercrest College Clippers in a pair of matches. A shorthanded RDP Kings Volleyball team split their series with the Clippers. The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team won the two-game series over the SAIT Trojans. The Kings Hockey team picked up a pair of points against the Concordia University Thunder. The RDP Kings Basketball squad earned two road victories and Queens Basketball had a win and a loss.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens dropped the Briercrest College Clippers in four sets (25-20, 25-23, 15-25 and 25-15).

Outside hitter Tess Pearman, a Bachelor of Education Elementary student, was named the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game, totaling 16 kills, 11 digs, three assists, one ace and a block.

The first place Queens (12-0) swept the Clippers (25-17, 25-16 and 25-19).

“We want to keep our minds focused on the next execution and what our jobs are, and I thought that was done quite well this afternoon,” said Chris Wandler, Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball Interim Head Coach.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, January 28 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings Volleyball team completed an impressive rally, downing the Briercrest College Clippers in five sets (22-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-23 and 15-10). First-year Brett Lower led the Kings’ offence with 26 kills.

“There were a lot of good things from our young guys,” said Aaron Schulha, Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball Head Coach. “All three outside hitters were first-year guys to finish the match which says a lot about the depth of the group and a lot about the leadership against a team that is well coached and has a lot of fire power.”

The first place Kings (10-2) were edged by the Clippers in five sets (21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 24-26 and 9-15).

North Star Sports Kings Player of the Game Brett Theise accumulated 48 assists, two digs and two kills.

Queens Hockey | Friday, January 28 | SAIT

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team defeated the SAIT Trojans 5-1 in Calgary. Mary Hirsch recorded four points.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, January 29 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Queens (6-1) blanked the Trojans 2-0. Dylan Norrie and Natalie Buttle scored for Red Deer Polytechnic. Goaltender Madison Fox made 26 saves, earning the shutout.

Kings Hockey | Friday, January 28 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team were shaded 4-3 by the Concordia University Thunder in overtime. Mathieu Lapointe, Sean Michalevich and Edmonton’s Konrad Belcourt scored for the Kings.

The Kings (4W-1L-2OTL-1T) and Thunder were deadlocked (3-3) after double-overtime and both teams earned a point in the standings. Hayden Clayton, Erik Miller and Belcourt struck for RDP. First-year Kings goaltender Kristian Lyon was solid in net, making 55 saves.

Queens Basketball | Friday, January 28 | Briercrest College

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team picked up an 84-75 victory over the Briercrest College Clippers in Saskatchewan. Amy Szymanek contributed 21 points and 13 rebounds. Keanna Richards, a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences student, added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Polytechnic.

The Queens (4-4) dropped a 69-56 decision to the Clippers. Once again, Szymanek had a strong game, accumulating 19 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, one block and an assist.

Kings Basketball | Friday, January 28 | Briercrest College

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team defeated the Clippers 88-77 on the road. Fifth-year guard Tyronn King had an incredible performance, totaling 36 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Kings Basketball | Saturday, January 29 | Briercrest College

The Kings (6-2) earned a 100-83 win over the Clippers. King had 22 points. Antonio Benjamin picked up 21.
