Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics recap

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens were quite successful on the road this past week.

The Polytechnic Kings and Queens Volleyball teams defeated the Ambrose University Lions twice. The Queens Hockey team picked up a pair of wins over the Olds College Broncos. In Saskatchewan, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team shutout the Briercrest College Clippers two times. The Kings Indoor Track team captured top spot and the Queens solidified second at Running Room Grand Prix #1 in Edmonton.

Queens Hockey | Thursday, January 20 | Olds College

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team defeated the Broncos 4-2 in Olds. Madison Sansom, Natalie Buttle, Jailyn Bablitz and Kiera Mulder scored for the Queens.

Queens Hockey | Friday, January 21 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The second place Queens (4-1) shutout the Broncos 2-0 in a rematch. Alexandra Black, a Bachelor of Education Secondary student, and Sansom, a Social Work student, found the back of the net for the Polytechnic. Queens goaltender Madison Fox made 21 saves.

Kings Hockey | Friday, January 21 | Briercrest College

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team dropped the Briercrest College Clippers 3-0 in Saskatchewan. Kyle Salaway, Hayden Clayton and Tucker Scantlebury struck for the Kings. RDP goaltender Arik Weersink turned aside 44 shots for the shutout.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, January 22 | Briercrest College

The Kings (4-1-1-0) earned an identical 3-0 road victory over the Clippers. Salaway, Sean Michalevich, and Erik Miller scored for Red Deer Polytechnic. Lethbridge’s Weersink earned the 34 save shutout.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, January 21 | Ambrose University

The Kings Volleyball team picked up a four set victory over the Ambrose University Lions in Calgary (25-23, 25-18, 21-25, and 29-27). First-year Nicholas Possingham received the Kings Player of the Game, contributing nine kills, two assists, a pair of digs and a block.

Kings Volleyball | Saturday, January 22 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The first place Kings (9-1) swept the Lions (25-18, 25-16 and 26-24). Red Deer’s Brett Lower had 14 kills, four digs and two aces for Red Deer Polytechnic.

Queens Volleyball | Friday, January 21 | Ambrose University

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens downed the Lions in four sets (25-20, 22-25, 25-15 and 25-23). Anna Carlson (11 kills), Tess Pearman (11 kills), and Jadyn Leong (10 kills) led the Queens’ offence.

Queens Volleyball | Saturday, January 22 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The first place Queens (10-0) swept the Lions (25-12, 25-17 and 26-24). Carlson, a Bachelor of Science Nursing student, was recognized as the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game.

The scheduled rematch was postponed.

Indoor Track | Saturday, January 22 | Running Room Grand Prix #1 | Concordia University

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Indoor Track team finished first and the Queens earned second in Edmonton.
