Rebels tame Broncos in 5-2 win

Jan 25, 2022 | 11:16 PM

The Red Deer Rebels made every shot count Tuesday evening with a 5-2 win against the Swift Current Broncos at the Innovation Credit Union i-plex.

The first period looked like it was going to be a strong one for the Broncos when Alexei Shanaurin scored his debut goal this WHL season at the 5:27 mark on Rebels goaltender Chase Coward, a Swift Current native. With the Rebels’ Ben King in the box on a high sticking penalty, the power play goal was assisted by Mathew Ward and Josh Filmon.

But the Rebels quickly bounced back with two back-to-back goals of their own.

Jayden Grubbe scored his seventh goal of the season, unassisted at 9:28 on Broncos netminder Reid Dyck, tying the game 1-1.

40 seconds later, Jace Isley scored his eighth goal of the season with help from Dallon Melin to make it 2-1 Red Deer.

After 20 minutes of play, it was Red Deer with the lead and the Rebels outshooting the Broncos 13-11.

Swift Current would tie it back up later in the second period when Josh Davies scored his 11th goal of the season at 16:22, with assists from Grayson Burzynski and Rylan Gould.

The period ended with the score locked at two goals a piece and shots on goal tied at eight, for a two-period total of 21-19 Red Deer.

The final period was smooth sailing for the Rebels though, as right at the get-go, Arshdeep Bains scored his 19th goal of the season at 2:14, with assists from Ben King and Dallon Melin. It was the eventual game winner and gave the Rebels a 3-2 lead at that point.

Then, with the Bronco’ Caleb Wyrostok called for tripping less than three minutes later, Red Deer’s Ben King scored his 29th goal of the season on the power play at 5:24, with assists from Jace Weir and Arshdeep Bains, giving the Rebels a 4-2 lead.

With the Broncos pulling goalie Reid Dyck out of the net at the 18:09 mark, the teams soon broke out in a heavy brawl with just one minute left in the game.

For the Rebels, both Kalan Lind and Kyle Masters each received a 10-minute misconduct alongside roughing penalties. For the Broncos, three players were sent to the box, including Mathew Ward and Josh Davies who were each called for roughing and also given 10-minute game misconducts. Brady Birnie, meanwhile, was called for cross-checking.

With the Rebels now having the man advantage, the Broncos put netminder Reid Dyck back on the ice, but the Rebels scored anyway as the clock ran out.

Red Deer’s Liam Keeler scored his 16th goal of the season at 20:00, with Arshdeep Bains assisting on the power play goal to make it a 5-2 final.

Swift Current outshot Red Deer 10-6 in the third period and 29-27 overall.

Meanwhile, the Rebels went 2/6 on the power play, while the Broncos went 1/7.

Despite losing, Swift Current still received two stars of the game, with each scoring a point for their team. Alexei Shanaurin received the game’s third star, with Josh Davies receiving the second. The first star went to Red Deer’s Chase Coward for his performance in net.

The win brings the Rebels’ record to 25-12-2-1 while the loss drops the Broncos to 14-19-4-1.

The Rebels face Swift Current once again this Friday, as they host the Broncos at the Peavey Mart Centrium for a 7 p.m. face-off.
