RDP Athletes of the Week

Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics has announced its RDP Athletes of the Week:

1. Halle Reid – Queens Indoor Track

Hometown – Airdrie, AB. Bachelor of Kinesiology (1st year)

At Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Indoor Track Grand Prix #1, Halle Reid had an outstanding day of competition for the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens. The first-year Bachelor of Kinesiology student (45.56) earned first in the women’s 300 metre final, a full second faster than the second place competitor (46.56) from Concordia University.

Then Reid, along with teammates Justine Larson, Lauren Pasiuk and Kammy Park, captured top spot in the women’s 4 x 200 m relay (1:59.11), over six seconds quicker than the Lethbridge College Kodiaks (2:05.20).

Reid, Larson, Pasiuk, and Park continued their strong performances on the track, placing second in the women’s 4 x 400 m relay (4:44.49), less than a second behind the first place Concordia University Thunder (4:43.62).

Airdrie’s Reid was a key contributor to the Queens’ overall second place finish among the competing female teams (48 team points).

2. Arik Weerksink – Kings Hockey

Hometown – Lethbridge, AB. Bachelor of Business Administration Management (3rd year)

Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey goaltender Arik Weersink played an integral role in helping his team earn two important road victories against the Briercrest College Clippers this past weekend. Over the pair of games, Weersink impressively did not allow a goal on 78 shots, earning back-to-back road shutouts.

In Friday’s 3-0 win, the Bachelor of Business Administration Management student was rock solid, making 44 saves.

Once again, Lethbridge’s Weersink stood tall in the Kings’ net on Saturday, turning aside all 34 shots for shutouts in consecutive games. The third-year was named the Kings Player of the Game for his tremendous performance.

The Clippers had opportunities to score, including eight power plays over the pair of contests, but Weersink made some timely and important saves to keep the opposition off the scoreboard.
