Town of Ponoka snow and ice control update

Jan 18, 2022 | 3:30 PM

Following Monday’s snowfall, Town of Ponoka operations staff are busy clearing drifted snow Tuesday, as well as sanding and salting roadways throughout the community.

Town officials say crews also continue to focus attention on Priority 1 and 2 routes as they remove and haul away snow from the roadways.

Motorists are asked to watch for ‘no parking’ signs along Priority 1 and 2 routes and to please move parked cars from roadways where ‘no parking’ signage is posted. Motorists are also reminded to drive with caution around snow and ice control equipment.

Town operations staff are also clearing snow and salting and sanding sidewalks adjacent to Town-owned properties, as well as on walking trails and park furniture (benches, picnic tables etc.) in Town parks and throughout the trail system.

Priority routes are designated based on the following criteria:

  • Emergency service routes;
  • School bus routes;
  • Traffic volume (pedestrians and vehicles);
  • Road classification; and
  • Special conditions (roadway geometry and terrain, drift exposure, drainage, etc).

Residents are reminded to please keep sidewalks bordering your property clear of ice and snow.

Town winter operations crews work in conjunction with the Alberta Ministry of Transportation, which is responsible for snow and ice control on Highways 2A and 53 in Ponoka.
