A trial date has been set for one of two men charged in a drive-by shooting in central Alberta last summer.

Jerry Lawrence James Johnson, 20, of Maskwacis, is scheduled for trial on Mar. 21, in Wetaskiwin provincial court.

Johnson is charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm and fail to comply with a release order in the Aug. 20, 2021 incident.

At approximately 3 a.m. that day, Maskwacis RCMP responded to a shooting in the Townsite area of the Ermineskin Cree Nation. Early reports indicated that multiple shots were fired and a vehicle fled the scene.

Police responded to the area and located two females with serious life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to hospital for medical treatment.

Officers identified two suspects involved in the shooting, with Johnson arrested and charged first in September 2021. A warrant was issued for the second suspect who was later arrested on Oct. 4, 2021.

Co-accused, Shayden Trey Rain, 20, of Maskwacis, is charged with two counts of attempted murder with a firearm, two counts of discharge firearm with intent, two counts of pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and using a firearm in the commission of an offence.

Rain is scheduled to return to court Jan. 25 for election and plea in Wetaskiwin.
