Jan. 11 Update: Ponoka Snow and Ice Control

Town Operations staff in Ponoka will continue to focus on Priority 1 and 2 routes for snow and ice control in the upcoming days, as well as sanding and salting roadways throughout the community.

With the arrival of warmer temperatures, crews are working on Priority 1 and 2 routes to remove and haul away hard-packed snow that has accumulated in order to help prevent icy ruts from developing along busy roadways.

Under the Town’s snow and ice control policy, once Priority 1 and 2 routes are completed, Town crews begin turning their attention to snow removal in residential areas.

It is to be noted that weather conditions and new snowfall events often require crews to redirect their attention back to Priority 1 and 2 routes.

For snow and ice control on Highways 2A and 53 in Ponoka, the Alberta Ministry of Transportation is responsible and work in conjunction with Town winter operations crews.

Notifications will be posted on the Town website and social media pages when snow clearing of residential zones commences, which is then conducted on a rotational basis according to zones.

This winter, residential snow clearing will begin in Zone 3 – Central District. To see the Snow Removal Zone Map, please visit www.ponoka.ca/p/snow-ice-control-program.

Town crews will also continue to clear snow, salting and sanding sidewalks adjacent to Town-owned properties, as well as on walking trails and park furniture (benches, picnic tables, etc.) in Town parks and throughout the trail system.

To report an icy intersection, back alley, or sidewalk that may need attention, residents can submit an online request form at https://form.foreaction.cloud/submit/ponoka or through the town website by clicking the Service Request button under ‘File an Online Service Request’. Residents can also phone the Town Office at 403-783-4431 where Town staff can help fill out the online form.

Keeping Sidewalks Bordering Private Property Clear of Ice and Snow

The Town advises residents to help keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice that border private property to protect the safety and well-being of fellow citizens in Ponoka.

It is also a requirement under the Town of Ponoka Community Standards Bylaw #384-17 and can result in fines.

When shovelling, residents are also asked to please avoid depositing snow and ice onto the roadway and properties other than their own. The town states that shovelling snow onto one’s own property is not only good for grass when it melts in the spring but is also a bylaw requirement.
