AHS: Manage pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes

Diabetes management classes temporarily moving online

Pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes management classes and information sessions provided for free by Alberta Health Services (AHS) will be moving temporarily online.

“Diabetes the Basics” is offered as a four-part group session led by AHS professionals who share their expertise, provide information and encourage discussions that can help participants better manage their condition. The session is offered to people at risk of developing diabetes, as well as those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes.

The information session is a virtual version of AHS’ Diabetes the Basics workshops, which are offered regularly in communities across the Central Zone.

“Diabetes The Basics” will be held via Zoom on the following dates:

  • Jan. 17, 24, 31 and Feb. 7 – from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 2, 9, 16 and 23 – from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Feb. 17, 24, March 3 and 10 – from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Participants will learn about:

  • What diabetes is
  • Foods that affect blood sugar
  • Blood glucose monitoring and control
  • Medications for diabetes
  • What to do during an illness
  • How physical activity affects blood sugar
  • The importance of foot care
