CMHA launches Mullets for Mental Health fundraiser

A new campaign called Mullets for Mental Health has launched in Red Deer to help raise awareness for men’s mental health.

Christine Stewart, Executive Director, Canadian Mental Health Association, Central Alberta Region, sheds light on the campaign and how it will get Red Deerians rallying together for a great cause.

“We find that men most likely don’t ask for help. Four out of every five completed suicides are male. I think that the number of people attempting is 50/50, but men happen to be more successful at following through and not asking for help,” explains Stewart. “So making sure by talking about it in a face-to-face about feelings, self-esteem and failure, ensuring that this feels normal. With men driven by success, finances weigh heavily as well. The importance is to reach out and talk,” adds Stewart.

“We have already reached out to some of the hair salons, and along with reaching out to some of the breweries and other local business’s to really challenge each other to see who can grow the best mullet,” shares Stewart.

With no age requirement for those who choose to brave the 80’s look, Stewart says, “For those who don’t want to commit to growing a mullet, we are ordering hair piece extensions for purchase and they can be worn for the month of March as well.”

With the focus set for the month of March, the organization also takes on pledges as well. “People are putting teams together, to band together and grow their hair out or to cut it for the cause,” says Stewart.

“The month of March specifies the raise in the talks about men’s mental health, which is also a great conversation starter for why the person is growing the mullet and raising money for mental health,” says Stewart.

According to Stewart, money raised will be used for programs focused in the central Alberta region. The fundraising goal is $10,000.

“We are always looking for a general organization along with finding ways to expand our service,” notes Stewart.
