Ponoka’s Downtown Skating Plaza set to open New Year’s Eve

Dec 30, 2021 | 11:38 AM

The Downtown Skating Plaza at 5110 – 48 Avenue in Ponoka, next to the old library, is set to open on Dec. 31 for New Year’s Eve.

Town officials note that throughout the winter months, citizens will be able to enjoy the outdoors by skating on the oval rink that surrounds the Town’s Christmas tree.

The Downtown Skating Plaza is on a first-come, first-served basis. When using the Downtown Skating Plaza, you’re asked to please limit your time (up to an hour) to allow others a chance to enjoy the ice.

Citizens are encouraged to continue following COVID-19 provincial health regulations at all outdoor rinks including:

  • Physical distancing from other households; and
  • Staying home if you are feeling unwell.

Throughout the holiday season, free public skating and shinny hockey are offered indoors at the Ponoka Arena Complex. To see a schedule, please visit www.ponoka.ca/p/ponoka-arena-complex

With the arrival of winter conditions, there are many other outdoor activities that will soon be available in Ponoka, such as cross-country skiing at the Ponoka Golf Course and the skating trail at Lions Centennial Park.

Updates on when these activities will open for the season will be posted to the Town’s website at www.ponoka.ca/p/outdoor-winter-recreation and on social media.
