Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics didn’t have to look far to find the new leader of the Queens Basketball team.

Ed Major, who has been an assistant coach on the Kings Basketball team this season, has been named Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball Interim Head Coach.

“We are very pleased to add an interim coach with Ed’s experience, knowledge, and coaching ability to guide the Queens into the latter half of the schedule,” says Randy Stewart, Red Deer Polytechnic Manager, Athletics and Student Life.

“His skills and resume are extensive which include coaching basketball at Notre Dame High School over the past 15 years. Ed’s familiarity with the Red Deer Polytechnic Basketball program will also help create a smooth transition into his new role with the Queens.”

RDP officials say Major is well known in central Alberta basketball circles, having coached junior and senior high school boys and girls basketball teams. As a Science and Outdoor Education teacher at Notre Dame, he is said to value all aspects of what it means to be a student-athlete at the Polytechnic, including lifelong learning. Major is also currently working on a master’s degree to accentuate his already dynamic leadership traits.

After six games this season, the Queens (3-3) are fourth in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division. The top six teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs.

“Under Ed’s guidance, we look forward to following the progression of the Queens over the final 10 regular season games,” says Stewart. “The team is young, full of potential, and has a core of strong student-athlete leaders who will be valuable as the Queens look to solidify a berth in the postseason.”

Major has the opportunity to work with an impressive group of student-athletes. Amy Szymanek, a Bachelor of Education Middle School student, leads the Queens with 14.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. United Kingdom’s Lauren France (12.8 points per game) and Sweden’s Sophie Melin (12.2 points per game) have also been key offensive contributors so far this season.

First-years Sadie Jeffries (Sylvan Lake) and Janai Hubert (Red Deer), second-year Keanna Richards (Red Deer), and third-year Szymanek (Stauffer) comprise a talented contingent of central Alberta student-athletes on the roster.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens will resume conference play against the second place St. Mary’s University Lightning (5-1) on Friday, January 14 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at 8 pm.

Major will officially begin his coaching duties on January 4.
