Recorded Omicron cases double in last day across Alberta

The total number of recorded Omicron COVID-19 cases went from 60 to 119 in the last day, almost double.

There have been eight cases recorded in Central Zone, though the bulk of them — 82 — are in Calgary Zone. In total, there are 3,120 active cases of COVID-19 confirmed to be a variant.

There are 4,212 total active cases of COVID-19 across the province right now, up 130 from yesterday.

All this with Alberta adding another 473 new cases of COVID-19, announced Friday. That’s out of 9,595 tests. The seven-day positivity rate is 4.21 per cent.

There are 352 Albertans hospitalized due to the virus, down 10, including 70 in intensive care, down one.

The province’s death toll is now listed as 3,285, meaning the death toll has decreased by one. This indicates a data correction based on human error or new medical information related to an individual death.

CENTRAL ZONE

Red Deer now sits at 86 active cases of COVID-19, down three from Wednesday.

Meantime, the city’s total number of recorded cases is up three to 9,502 in the last day, while recoveries are up six to 9,332.

Red Deer’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 is 84, with none reported today.

LOOK-BACK: On this day one year ago, there were 1,111 total cases of COVID-19 recorded in the city (+250 over the previous week), with 417 active cases (+32) and zero deaths.

The Central Zone as a whole has 499 active cases as of Friday, down five from Wednesday. There are 68 hospitalizations, down one, with nine people receiving intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the same as yesterday.

The Central Zone has had 409 deaths linked to COVID-19, with none reported today. This is a decrease of one, which indicates a data correction based on human error or new medical information related to an individual death.

VACCINATIONS

Alberta has delivered 7,223,655 vaccine doses as of Dec. 16, up 28,708 in the last day.

Of the 5+ population, 83.3 per cent has received at least one dose (78.2% total population), while 77.0 per cent is now fully vaccinated (72.4% total population).

A total of 571,363 booster (third) shots have been administered, up 23,454.

*Local numbers below now reflect percentages based on the number of people in Red Deer who are 5+, which recently changed from 12+, therefore numbers may be lower than they had been; the Government of Alberta says 100,446 people in Red Deer are eligible for vaccination, with a population of 106,420.

In Red Deer, 76,312 (76.0% eligible/71.7% total population) people have received at least one dose, up 55.

Meanwhile, 71,630 (71.3% eligible/67.3% total population) residents are fully vaccinated, up 41.

INFLUENZA

Alberta Health is reporting 17 total lab-confirmed cases of influenza, up 11 from the last reporting period ending Dec. 4.

There are two cases in Calgary Zone, and 15 cases cases in Edmonton Zone. They are all Influenza A. There have been zero hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and deaths.

A total of 1,044,623 doses of influenza vaccine have been administered this season.
