The Red Deer Rebels melted the ice with a fiery 6-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos at the Peavey Mart Centrium Wednesday night.

The first period saw the Rebels Jhett Larson open the scoring by potting his seventh goal of the season at the mid-way point of the opening frame on Swift Current goaltender Isaac Poulter. The goal was assisted by Christoffer Sedoff and Arshdeep Bains and put the Rebels up 1-0.

Shortly after, at the 16:26 mark, Ben King scored his whopping 17th goal of the season, with helpers from Trey Patterson and Arshdeep Bains once again.

The period ended 2-0 in favour of the Rebels who also outshot the Broncos 6-3 after 20 minutes.

Red Deer doubled their score in the second period, beginning with Kai Uchacz earning his ninth goal of the season, assisted by Kalan Lind, at the 5:32 mark to put the Rebels up 3-0.

Josh Filmon then scored the Broncos first goal of the game halfway through the period on Rebels netminder Connor Ungar. His 11th goal of the season was assisted by Connor Hvidston and Kayden Sadhra-Kang, making the score 3-1. Then with less than a minute left in the period, the Rebels’ Kyle Masters pushed their lead further to 4-1, scoring his second goal this season, with help from Jayden Grubbe.

Like the first period, the Rebels outshot the Broncos in the second period by a margin of 17-8.

In the third period with Swift Current’s Connor Hvidson in the box for goalie interference, Red Deer’s Arshdeep Bains scored his 13th goal of the season at the 7:28 mark. The power play goal was assisted by Ben King and Christoffer Sedoff.

Now with a 5-1 lead, the Rebels’ Dallon Melin finished the game in the final two minutes of the period capitalizing on a rebound in front of the net. His third goal of the season was assisted by Blake Stevenson, making the final score 6-1.

The Rebels maintained their dominance in shots on goal in the third period by a margin of 17-4. They also went 1/2 on the power play while the Broncos were 0/4 with the man advantage.

Rebels coach Steve Konowalchuk described the night’s success as “a good team win”.

“It was a solid game and pretty much for 60 minutes it was pretty solid on both ends of the ice,” he said. “I thought we generated, I thought we cycled the puck.”

Red Deer swept all three stars of the game, with Kalan Lind receiving the third star, Ben King the second, and Arshdeep Bains the game’s first star.

“It was a real nice play on that first goal. Larson fits in there nicely with them and then they make another play. They’re a dangerous line. They’re working hard and playing the right way, they’ve been doing it most of the season,” said Konowalchuk.

The dominant win brings the Rebels’ record to 18-9-1-1 while the loss for the Broncos drops their record to 11-14-2.

The Rebels play again on home ice this Friday evening at the Peavey Mart Centrium when they host the Calgary Hitmen at 7 p.m.
