Concerts in Care providing gift of live music for seniors

Dec 15, 2021 | 4:40 PM

Concerts in Care by non-profit organization, Health Arts Society of Alberta (HASA), is thrilled to announce their gift of music experience to seniors in care this holiday season.

Albertans can buy or donate a live concert with professional musicians for $300 to a long term care home or retirement community of their choice, or where a family member lives. Each forty-five minute concert features local professional artists from a wide variety of backgrounds including classical, jazz, opera, and folk.

HASA started Concerts in Care as a way to help make the musical arts accessible to elders or those who are unable to attend a performance in the community. Those interested in giving the gift of music to spread festive cheer can donate on the HASA website.

“Some of our audience members are life-long music lovers who are no longer physically able to attend concerts in the community but can fully explain the magnitude of what it means to them; others, often living with dementia, may not be able to put into words what the concerts mean to them, but will sing along with familiar melodies, laugh or even cry.” says Meran Currie-Roberts, Executive and Artistic Director of Health Arts Society of Alberta. “Music has a way of reaching beyond age, disability or language. We are grateful for the many Albertans who are stepping up to help bring music to those who need it most.”

The Health Arts Society of Alberta (HASA) performs over 300 Concerts in Care for Albertans in care across the province each year. HASA is one of seven independent societies across Canada, all focused on bringing vibrant artistic experiences to seniors.

In addition to live music, HASA recognized a need to reach seniors isolated by the COVID pandemic, and expanded to include two digital concert platforms that feature weekly performances by local artists.

“One of our residents with end-stage dementia brought tears to my eyes, she was using her finger as if conducting, showing more connection and emotion then she had shown in years.” says a senior care home staff member.
