Charges dismissed for Lacombe man accused in alleged assault

Dec 10, 2021 | 3:00 PM

Charges have been dismissed for a Lacombe man accused of assaulting his female companion in Red Deer County two years ago.

Fritz Solberg, 41, had counts of assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats, and theft under $5,000 all dismissed in Red Deer provincial court earlier this month. A charge of choking with intent was withdrawn in June of this year, along with another charge of intimidation-threats of violence. The accused was discharged in Feb. 2020.

The incident took place on July 12, 2019 when Innisfail RCMP responded to a complaint at 12:50 a.m., of a distraught female who was camping where the Red Deer River and Medicine River meet.

Mounties made contact with the woman who stated she had been assaulted by her male companion. The victim was stuck on the south side of the river and could not leave the situation.

Due to the high river flow and the secluded area it was in, Innisfail RCMP received assistance from Red Deer County Search and Rescue, Rocky Mountain House Search and Rescue, Innisfail and Red Deer County fire departments, Civilian Aviation Search and Rescue, Red Deer County Community Peace Officers, Raven Crime Watch, and Rocky Mountain House RCMP.

Due to the assistance from multiple agencies and the public, police say the victim was located and RCMP able to arrest the suspect without incident.
