Rebels select 12 players in WHL Prospects Draft

The Red Deer Rebels completed the 2021 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft on Thursday by selecting 12 players.

Meantime, seven other players from Central Alberta were selected in Thursday’s draft.

They include Caleb Hadland from Sylvan Lake, AB who was selected 22nd overall in the first round. Hadland currently plays for Yale Hockey Academy U18 Prep out of Abbotsford, B.C. The 5’10”, 165 pound LW was taken by the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Of the 22 players selected in the first round, there were 14 forwards and eight defencemen chosen. Of those, nine came from British Columbia, five from Saskatchewan, followed by four each from Alberta and Manitoba.

A total of 12 players from Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) teams were selected in the first round.

Rhys Pederson, of Stettler, AB, was selected by the Edmonton Oil Kings in the fifth round, 90th overall. Pederson is a 6’1”, 155 pound LD who currently plays for the Devon, AB based Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX) U16 Prep team.

Spencer Michnik, of Sylvan Lake, AB, was selected in the fifth round, 96th overall by the Seattle Thunderbirds. The 6’1”, 160 pound goaltender currently plays for NAX U16 Prep.

Ryan Seeley, of Olds, AB, was selected by the Moose Jaw Warriors, also in the fifth round, 104th overall. Seeley is a 5’11”, 165 pound RD currently with NAX U16 Prep.

Will Jamieson, of Delburne, AB, was selected by the Spokane Chiefs in the fifth round, 111th overall. The 5’8”, 155 pound forward is out of the Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) U17 Prep Black team.

Coy Pighin, of Alix, AB, was taken in the sixth round, 118th overall by the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Pighin is a 6’0”, 175 pound RW currently with Yale Hockey Academy U18 Prep.

Connor Baumbach, of Red Deer, AB, was selected in the seventh round, 143rd overall by the Prince Albert Raiders. Baumbach is a 5’11”, 146 pound goaltender with the U16 AAA North Star Chiefs.

Players eligible for the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft are 2006-born players who reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

The 2022 WHL Prospects Draft will be held Thursday, May 19, 2022.
